On July 30, the General Services Administration (GSA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) recognizes National Whistleblower Appreciation Day. Today highlights the vital role whistleblowers play in revealing fraud, waste, and abuse.
National Whistleblower Appreciation Day marks the 1778 resolution by the Second Continental Congress, which affirmed that reporting misconduct in public service is a duty of every citizen. In America’s 250th year, this principle remains essential to integrity in public service.
Whistleblowers and GSA OIG’s mission
Whistleblowers help OIGs accomplish their mission to combat fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct by reporting suspected wrongdoing. Through reporting potential wrongdoing, whistleblowers have helped GSA OIG uncover:
- a multimillion-dollar alleged fraud scheme involving federal contracts intended to support service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses;
- a bribery scheme involving a GSA official and construction contracts;
- mismanagement of asbestos at a federal building that placed building occupants, visitors, and contractors at risk of asbestos exposure.
