Works Progress Administration Painting "Portrait of a Farmer" Recovered

U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) Boston-based special agents recently recovered a Works Progress Administration (WPA) oil painting entitled “Portrait of a Farmer” by George Harris.

GSA OIG agents received a tip that a WPA painting was being offered for auction at an estate sale in Newton, Massachusetts. The piece had belonged to a former Connecticut elementary school principal, who brought it home after retirement.

The painting was returned after the GSA Fine Arts Program reviewed images and information to authenticate the painting as federal property.
